There is one standard form most Catholics mean when they say “the Rosary,” but rosary beads come in several physical formats and Catholic tradition also includes other bead-based devotions called chaplets.
Understanding the difference helps you choose a prayer aid without confusing materials, construction styles and distinct devotions.
The Clear Answer
The standard Catholic Rosary is the five-decade Rosary with 59 beads. One-decade rosaries, bracelets and rings are compact ways to count the same Rosary prayers. Paracord, wood, stone, pearl and crystal describe materials or construction, not different prayers. Chaplets such as the Divine Mercy Chaplet or Seven Sorrows devotion are distinct prayer forms.
1. The Traditional Five-Decade Rosary
The standard five-decade Rosary has 59 beads, a crucifix and usually a centerpiece. Five groups of ten Hail Mary beads form the five decades, each preceded by an Our Father.
While praying, Catholics meditate on five mysteries chosen from the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful or Glorious Mysteries.

2. One-Decade Rosary
A one-decade rosary provides a compact way to count ten Hail Marys and the accompanying Our Father and Glory Be.
Designs vary. Some are small loops, some have a short strand and crucifix, and some are made to fit easily in a pocket.
A one-decade rosary is not automatically the same thing as a chaplet. “Chaplet” is a broader term for various devotional prayer forms, many of which have their own prayers and bead arrangements.

3. Rosary Bracelets and Rings
Rosary bracelets usually place one decade on the wrist. Rosary rings use ten raised markers or beads around a ring-like form.
These are practical counting tools for travel, commuting or short periods of prayer. Wearing them is not itself the same as praying.

4. Paracord Rosaries
Paracord rosaries use cord construction chosen for durability and a substantial feel. They are often paired with larger beads and metal crucifixes or medals.
“Paracord rosary” describes construction, not a different prayer. It is still normally a five-decade Rosary.
Paracord can be a good choice for daily carry or people who prefer rugged construction, but no rosary is literally unbreakable. Beads, medals, knots and other components can still wear or fail.

5. Wooden Rosaries
Wooden rosaries are usually lighter than stone or metal designs and have a warm, traditional appearance.
Olive wood is especially associated with Holy Land craftsmanship, while other woods offer different grain, color and weight.
The material does not make the prayer more or less holy. It mainly affects feel, appearance and care requirements.

6. Natural Stone Rosaries

7. Pearl, Glass and Crystal Rosaries
Pearl-style, glass and crystal beads are chosen mainly for appearance and tactile feel. They can range from understated to highly decorative.
Faceted glass or crystal may reflect more light, while pearl-style beads often create a softer visual effect.
These materials do not carry official Catholic spiritual powers. Their suitability depends on the user's preference, durability needs and how the rosary will be carried or stored.
8. Seven Sorrows Devotion
The Seven Sorrows devotion focuses on seven events of suffering in Mary's life in relation to Jesus. It commonly uses seven groups of seven Hail Marys.
This is a distinct Marian devotion rather than simply another material style of the standard five-decade Rosary.
Its purpose is meditation and prayer, especially contemplation of Mary's participation in the suffering surrounding Christ.

9. The World Mission Rosary
The World Mission Rosary is associated with Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Its five decades use different colors representing regions of the world and encourage prayer for the Church's missionary work and peoples around the globe.
The colors serve a devotional purpose within this specific prayer tradition. They should not be confused with a universal Catholic rule assigning spiritual effects to rosary colors.

Catholic tradition includes many other bead-based devotions. Examples include:
